Can I get a nexus letter online?

Updated October 4, 2026

You can get a nexus letter online: a nexus opinion can be written from a review of your records, without an exam, and VA weighs it on the clinician's qualifications, the records reviewed and the reasoning. Be wary of any service that promises approval, writes the letter before reading your records, or sends a letter with no clinician's signature. At Commander Health you upload records for a free screen; then a licensed clinician reviews them for a flat $500 and signs only if they support the opinion.

Is a records-only nexus letter legitimate?

Yes. VA's own policy describes a medical opinion as a provider's statement of findings and views that may be based on a review of the veteran's medical records, a personal examination, or both (VHA Directive 1134). What makes the opinion competent is the author's qualifications (38 CFR 3.159(a)(1)); what makes it persuasive is the records and the reasoning.

Warning signs

  • A letter offered before anyone has read your records.
  • Promises of approval, a rating, or a specific outcome.
  • A fee tied to your back pay or your award.
  • No clinician's signature or credentials on the letter.
  • The same template wording no matter what your records say.

How Commander Health works, step by step

  • Upload your records: service treatment records, current treatment records, and any decision letter or C&P exam.
  • The free screen checks for a current diagnosis, the in-service event, continuity of care and support for the link. If something is missing, it says what, and you pay nothing.
  • Choose a service: a nexus letter is $500 flat, a DBQ is $200, both together are $550.
  • A licensed clinician reviews your records. Any follow-up question comes by email; there are no calls or video visits.
  • The clinician signs only if the records support the opinion, or declines. You get your money back if we cannot complete your case.

What you still do yourself

You submit the letter to VA with your claim. Commander Health is not a law firm, is not VA-accredited, and does not file claims. It reviews physical conditions only.
